I told Meek, I wouldn't trust Nicki, seems that Rick Ross is not only the biggest boss that we've seen thus far but also our neighbourhood psychic as shown in Apple of My Eye. Back with a bang Rick Ross has brought us his newest album, Rather You than Me. After a prolonged period of mediocre albums Ross has finally returned to the best version of himself, similar to the one we were shown in God Forgives, I Don't.
In Santorini Greece Rozay allows us to enter his lifestyle from the lavish cars, hundreds of women and expensive clothes; exclaiming I say the bank account done caught the Holy Ghost! But he also digs into the darker sides of his lifestyle for example, how some of his crew are still struggling selling drugs, trafficking or even just in low paid 9 to 5s. Rapping these lyrics over a slow, smooth beat with a vocal overlay; Rozay has created a track to put everyone and anyone in a nostalgic mood.
Of course, this thoughtful track is followed by a light-hearted skit from Chris Rock at the beginning of Idols become Rivals. In this track Rozay describes how an artist he used to look up to (who is known to us as Birdman) betrayed him and his brothers. I pray you find kindness in your heart for Wayne His entire life he gave you What was there to gain? Rozay addresses the Lil Wayne-Birdman debacle where Birdman was refusing to allow Tha Carter V to be released. Rozay explains in the track how he wish it didn't have to come to this as the two were good friends but the situation has gone to far. The raw rap in this track just goes to show how Rozay is back, better and ready to stand up for what he knows is right.
I TOOK MY ROOF OFF AT THE RED LIGHT!!! Straight into Trap Trap Trap where Rozay employs Young Thug and Wale to bring us the first trap influenced song of the album. This is the type of song you do the most serious milly rock whilst embracing your inner trap lord. Incredible verses from all three rappers but I think Wale bodied the track the best in my opinion. Rozay came through with some spectacular features on this album from Young Thug to Gucci Mane all the way to his fellow MMG members Meek Mill and Wale. I think that's another reason I love the album because it reminds me of the Self-Made days where anyone and everyone could be on a track and it would BANG!
Another skit from Chris Rock at the beginning of Powers that Be and a classic collaboration with Nas. In this track, Rozay shows us a little snippet of his childhood especially the lack of expensive things he had, but now that's all changed due to his successful rap career. Rozay delivers hard truths about his life in a sonically pleasing flow and the addition of Nas creates a nice balance in this track.
Lamborghini doors, is a beautiful track where you kind of understand the closeness of Rozay and Meek Mill's friendship. And really the two rappers together never go wrong. From Rozay describing the first time he went to visit Meek when he was put in jail to How they've both "come up" together. This is one of my favourite tracks not only because they're two of my favourite rappers but because the reminiscent atmosphere created plays nicely into how the album ends.
But now to my absolute favourite track of the album…Maybach Music V, if in the slightest chance Rick Ross or his associates see this; please please please make a music video for this song. The song features Dej Loaf who complements Rozay perfectly. It reminds of another favourite Rick Ross track of mine from God Forgives, I Don't titled: Amsterdam . The use of vocals over rap, a beat prescribed for a chilled mood and the catchy lyrics makes this the stand-out track for me on this album.
So to sum it up, I think this may just be my second favourite Rozay album of all time (after GFID of course) and a final message from me, I WANT MY NIGGAS RICH BY SUMMER 17!
